It
was with great sadness that we learned of Herman Pelger's death on July
16, 2002. Herman was a very active member of Lake St. Louis Squadron
with 13 Merit Marks to his credit. He joined the Squadron in 1983, after
passing the Boat Course. Then he took more courses to get his JN.
Herman worked as an instructor, proctor, marker and he served on
the Bridge as well. He was a member of the group dubbed the "Galley
Slaves". This group of people came in to mark homework. It was
during this time when we had Boating classes up to 140 students in the
big dining room upstairs. The group marked all the homework in the bar
downstairs. They also made motes for the students and kept track of
people who needed help. BUT, they wanted to be anonymous. I tried to
introduce them as a group to the class, but to no avail.
Occasionally, I would catch them when they brought the homework
back before the class ended. They were a great group and the backbone of
the teaching process.
As
a Bridge member, Herman was always ready to take on a job, and you knew
it would be done. He was proud of being a part of CPS and was pleased to
work for the Squadron. Herman was a friend to everyone who knew him. He
will be missed by all his friends, especially in Lake St. Louis
Squadron.
